Name: Sheriff Stilinski
Canon: Teen Wolf
Original or Alternate Universe: OU
Canon Point: end of 2x12
Number: 024

Setting: MTV werewolves, where everything's made up and the points don't matter

History:
We know remarkably little about Stilinski's past. The show hasn't even given us his first name. That being said, we are given enough to work with to show what kind of person he is. At some point in his life, he decided to pursue a career as a legal official. He was clearly good at his job, having been elected as sheriff of Beacon Hills County. He was married and madly in love with his wife, but when Stiles was still a young boy she died of cancer. Since that time, Stilinski has been raising Stiles as a single parent on a single income. They aren't that bad off, judging from the fact that Stiles doesn't seem to have a job, but can manage to afford a car and to drop money on a 32" LCD screen TV for a girl he's had a crush on since forever.

Stilinski plays a key role in the movement of Teen Wolf. He is present through much of what happens throughout the series, though his perspective is through that of a parent, and an adult, with zero knowledge of the Supernatural Business going on in Beacon Hills. His team finds the body of Laura Hale in the woods, which begins a convoluted and often contradictory series of events that confuse the hell out of Stilinski but also lead him on a wild goose chase that his him reopen the Hale house case file. Eventually, he uncovers enough evidence (by connecting murders that happen in the town back to the Hale house fire) that it wasn't an accident, that it was arson, and that the culprit was alive. However, when it is discovered Kate Argent set the fire, she's killed (a ~mysterious animal attack~) and the case is dropped.

In the second season, we see more strain happening within the Stilinski family and on the sheriff himself. There's tension between father and son, as Stiles has been wrapped up with teen werewolves and, in an effort to keep it a secret and thus his father safe, doesn't speak openly with him anymore. Stiles also seems to be "acting out" in ways that are pretty extreme, even for him. The season centers, again, around animal attacks and murders happening in Beacon Hills. The sheriff, heading the case, can't seem to come up with any answers aside from the fact that the murder victims are somehow connected to the school. In the middle of all this, Stiles gets a restraining order placed on him and steals a police truck from the station. As a result, the sheriff briefly loses his job. He gets it back only with the help of Stiles and Scott in figuring out who the murderer is.

Despite, in the finale, being held hostage, locked up in the station and privy to massive amounts of gunfire- the sheriff is knocked out and somehow misses all of the supernatural activity. At this point, he's still completely (or mostly) in the dark about what's going on in Beacon Hills, but highly suspicious of the events and, likely, of his own kid.

Personality:
Sheriff Stilinski is an honest man, a loving husband, and a devoted father. This shows in his family life and in his work ethic, which is likely how he was elected to the job of sheriff to begin with.

It's arguable that there is nobody more important to the sheriff than his son, Stiles, and his family has always been of utmost important to him, and a great influence on his adult life. Though his wife has passed away, he still wears his wedding ring. When asked about Stiles' given name, he explains it was his wife's father's name, and when prompted with You must really love your wife he says I did. His devotion and love for his wife, and his son, become even clearer when we see the positive relationship between the sheriff and his son. Stilinski checks on him frequently and expresses interest in his life. He discusses aspects of his job that he shouldn't be discussing (ie. case files) with Stiles and bounces ideas off of him. He sits with him at the station and drives him around in his work vehicle. In short, despite his busy work schedule, Stilinski makes a point to make time for Stiles. This shows that he has an almost impeccable grip on his time management skills, because lets face it, running after a hyperactive kid and managing an entire county isn't exactly an easy job.

Along with this perseverance, he also displays an extraordinary amount of patience. Stiles is described as having ADHD, something that could really push on a person's temper, especially coming from a child- one that Stilinksi essentially had to raise on his own on top of being the sheriff and taking care of his sick and dying wife. But Stiles' possible guilt complex about his behavioural disorder aside, the sheriff shows no signs of bitterness at his situation or his family. The sheriff needed, and needs, to be patient with a son that is incredibly intelligent and constantly needing new curiousities to keep him entertained. This, in the series, is often shown as Stiles sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong (searching the woods for Laura Hale's body, turning up at crime scenes, jumping into a car with a suspected murderer cough Derek cough). Something to be noted, on top of this, is that Stilinski never seems to punish Stiles for showing up in these dubious situations.

He never grounds him. Never takes his car keys away. Even when he has a restraining order placed on him and he steals a police van, we see very little in the way of extenuating consequences. When Stilinski loses his job, he seems only tired and sad, and when Stiles asks why he isn't angry, says Maybe I don't want to have to feel worse by having to yell at my son. Theoretically, this is because of what happened with his mother, and perhaps that Stilinski feels he needs to go easy on his son because of the stress of what happened. The fact that no child should have to grow up without a mom.

When Stiles was still young, his mother contracted cancer and died from her illness. Despite the strong person Stilinski undoubtedly is, the man isn't infallible, and he was moved deeply by the grief of losing her. It's alluded to fact that he struggled with an addiction to alcohol after she passed, and likely also with depression. It's likely only Stiles that helped him through this low point. Whether this was partly purposeful (we see a great degree of Stiles 'taking care' of his father by bringing him healthy food to eat at work) or not isn't really a focal point of the situation so much as the fact that Stilinski found something to keep him going. If he didn't shake his depression and his addiction to alcohol, he'd lose his son and his job, both of which are incredibly important to him. More important, apparently, than his own sadness.

Stilinski is a good man, one that doesn't show any real signs of being underhanded in his job or his daily life. Manipulation and coercion don't seem to be part of his vocabulary, though curiousity and a firm personality certainly are. He isn't easily swayed or pushed around by others, as can be expected from an official. His sense of justice isn't exactly black and white, but he does have a clear understanding of what he can and cannot do in his job and in his position. He does his best to operate within his level of jurisdiction, but when faced with a challenge, he definitely doesn't throw up his hands and back down from it. Quite the opposite, in fact.

He's shown as having a keen mind and an inquisitive nature. He follows his gut instinct, and if something isn't sitting right with him, will revisit the problem again and again until he can figure out what he's missing. He's hardly infallible, and not a genius level detective, but Stilinski is definitely someone who will keep sniffing until he digs up the right clue. For example, he returns to the Beacon Hills veterinarian about bizarre animal attacks or occurrences time and again, despite the fact the man keeps telling him it isn't his area of expertise, because it's the only lead he might get. When things are going sideways and he knows it isn't something he regularly deals with, he calls in a state inspector. In fact, the only person he ever seems to back down from an interrogation with is his son Stiles, but this boomerangs back to the earlier commentary on his relationship with his son.

Sheriff Stilinski is accepting, kind, and fiercely protective. He retains a sense of humor and while, at times, can seem abrasive, it's chiefly born of his direct nature and the fact that he doesn't seem to like beating around the bush if he can avoid it. Sometimes he needs a nudge (Stiles taking the bottle away when he goes to poor himself another glass of whiskey) in the right direction, but Stilinski's heart is in the right place. He's a man trying to do his best with the hand life has dealt him.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: The Sheriff, like his son, is painfully human. His only abilities stem from basic police training which include weapons handling, hand to hand combat, detective work, communications, and the like. At one point in the series, he does rip a metal ring off the wall of a police station, but until proven otherwise, I believe this was mostly due to the adrenalin of the high stress situation he was in.

It's an anxiety he hasn't faced since that time when he was little, Stiles had decided he was going to run away to Canada. His mother had been at the hospital at the time, and the sheriff had been late getting to the school to pick him up the way he'd said he would. A teacher had told him they'd seen him leave with Scott, but when he called Mrs McCall, she'd said that Stiles hadn't been at her house that afternoon. The cold panic that had seized his chest had been violent and crippling.

Instead of calling his wife and telling her, making her worry, he'd sent out an alert on his dispatch to keep an eye out for his son. Two hours later, the sheriff had found Stiles three blocks away on the same side of the street because he wasn't allowed to cross traffic alone.

But Stiles was sixteen, now, and those borders didn't hold him in anymore. His jeep was still at the school and nobody had seen him once the lights had gone out on the field. He and his son haven't been talking the way they used to, and so when he finds himself standing in the middle of Stiles' room, still looking lived in, he finds that he's at a loss. He doesn't even know where to start, and it isn't a feeling he's ever enjoyed. They still needed to figure out what, exactly, had happened to Jackson, and while Stilinski's mind went with his officers, he didn't have his badge right now.

    Which left him with nothing.

All he can think is that as of this moment, he's lost his wife, his job, and now he's lost his son. When he hangs up the cell phone and feels the crushing weight of god, baby, I couldn't help you and now I've lost our kid, for one terrifying moment the sheriff isn't sure he can do it. If they don't find Stiles, if he turns up in the woods, dead (and before, this wouldn't have been a concern, but now it's all his mind keeps circling back on. Death and murder in Beacon Hills have become frightening commonplace the last two years), there will be nothing left of him.

"Come on, Stiles, where are you?"
